How Shipt Supports Our Community During Hurricane Season
As the season for intense tropical storms begins, remaining weather aware and having essential items ready is crucial. As a retail tech company, we’re here to support our community, members, shoppers, and drivers in those moments. And as a company based in the southeast, human connection and community are part of our DNA.
Being weather aware is something our Shipt HQ team takes seriously, which is why they actively monitor the weather to ensure those who rely on Shipt have the information they need to plan for incoming weather. We do this by letting members know when they can expect delivery of the items they need and by providing shoppers and drivers with communication about weather conditions as they’re deciding when to work.
To help support shopper and driver safety on the Shipt platform, we regularly share in-app messages to shoppers in metros that are expecting and experiencing inclement weather, informing them of what’s expected and what we’re hearing from local officials. Based on weather conditions, reports from shoppers, and guidance from local officials, Shipt will also close a metro/market/zone to pause orders until it’s deemed safe. Regardless of the weather, we always encourage shoppers to prioritize their safety, which means only claiming orders they feel comfortable completing.
To help customers prepare, Shipt communicates to customers early through in-app notifications, helping them stock up for their everyday essentials and last-minute items in case of weather delays or closures. Because safety is paramount, we’re also very transparent with customers if there are expected delays or closures in their area due to severe weather.
We’re also staying close to our retail partners to ensure we know when they’re closing due to severe weather, and likewise when they’re back open to serve their community. As staples in their community, they also serve as a way to support in times of disaster relief.
To support the community, Shipt proactively partners with national organizations, like the American Red Cross, Feeding America, and Meals on Wheels America, year-round to support them with the resources they need to provide immediate disaster relief. Last year, Shipt and the American Red Cross unveiled a new emergency response vehicle, which will help to deliver essential services such as food, water, and relief supplies to those affected by emergencies.
Shipt’s technology and the shoppers and drivers who work on Shipt’s platform play an important role in strengthening communities. Shoppers and drivers not only bring members the things they want from the stores they love – they’re also there for their neighbors, connecting with them with care and compassion. During previous hurricanes, we've seen incredible acts of kindness from shoppers who helped deliver essential supplies to vulnerable community members.
